I do love "Frozen Flower"(쌍화점)which is a story about the power of love expressed through the close relationship of the King, his guard, and the queen. The film also shows the differences between true love (King's and his guard's) and passionate love (the guard's and the Queen).

Another film is "VIEW FROM THE TOP" which is about a young country girl having desire for being an international flight attendant. Eventually,she with patience, intelligence, and ambition can overcome all obstacles and fulfill her dream.

"Circularity implies Futility" : May 28, 2009

“Circularity implies futility”

According to Donald L. Shaw’s article, it is said that in Borges’ fiction “Circularity implies futility”. After reading Borges’ ‘The Secret Miracle’, I absolutely agree with Donald L. Shaw’s comment because in this fiction many narrative elements and details support the idea about circularity and its futile consequences.

In Borges’ ‘Secret Miracle’, the first narrative element showing the circular events (the repeated actions) is at the beginning of the story when the narrator tells about the game of chess. The game in general should have its consequences: who is the winner and the loser, and if it is a competition, it should have some prizes as well. Borges in ‘Secret Miracle’, however, subverts this tradition to show how the circular action or the repeated game (the chess) leads to nothingness (futility). Like a circularity, this game has been repeatedly playing for long time by ‘two illustrious family’-- ‘it had been started many centuries in the past’ (line 5-6) -- but until now there have had neither a winner nor a loser of the game. Also, the award for the chess competition is unknown well-- ‘No one could say what the forgotten prize was to be’ in (line 6-7), and as far as the reader and the characters know, it is just a rumor, not the fact, that the prize is ‘vast’, perhaps ‘infinite’. The same as ‘the forgotten prize’, the important equipments used in the game (the chessboard and the chess pieces) are also unseen as well: ‘The chess pieces and the chessboard themselves were in a secret tower’ (line 7-8). The clearest point to illustrate Donald’s idea (‘Circularity implies futility’) that is expressed through the circular game (the chess) repeatedly played for long time can be seen in lines 11-12: Hladik is so obsessive about the chess that he dreams of it and calls it by ‘inescapable game’. Absurdly, the narrator tells that Hladik is incapable to play the chess as he can recognize both the ‘figures’ neither the ‘rules’ of the game; ‘but he could recall neither the figures nor the roles of the chess’ (line 11). Not only express the details in the beginning of this fiction, but the contradictory of Borges’ selected words also suggested the circular game and its worthless conclusion (‘Circularity implies futility’). The game seems to have significance as it is played by ‘two illustrious family’-- the ‘illustrious’ expresses the positive meaning (admirable and famous) -- yet the game is played for too long time (‘it had been started many centuries in the past’) and ‘inescapable’ (this word expresses the circular and repeated motion); thus, the game becomes ordinary activity. To express that the game repeatedly played for long time (circular action) results in meaningless, Borges in the following lines juxtaposes those positive- meaning words with the negative-meaning words such as ‘forgotten prize’, ‘rumored’ and ‘a secret tower’ all of these words imply the meaningless and the futility.
